Applying false lashes can be a little intimidating—we totally get it. You’re gluing something onto your eyelids, literally right next to your eyes. Plus, the correct application can make or break the look not only of your lashes, but of your makeup as a whole.
The stakes might feel pretty high, but not to worry! Follow our guide on how to put on false eyelashes for beginners and practice applying them at home to get the technique down. Soon, you’ll be a lash application pro.

Check the Size and Fit of the False Eyelashes
Before you get started, make sure the rest of your makeup look is complete. You don’t want to apply the lashes until everything else is already in place.
Next, remove your eyelash strips from their tray and hold them up to your eyelid, comparing them to the width of your own natural lash line to check their size and fit.
Trim for Width and Length
Unless you’ve worn them before and already trimmed them to fit, chances are your false lashes are going to be too wide for your eyes. That’s where trimming them down to size comes in. Trim your false lashes carefully, removing excess lash band from their outer corners.
As for the inner corners of your eyes, keep in mind that your false lashes should never stop too close to your tear duct—shoot for about 2 millimeters of space between the lashes and the inner corner of your eyes.
To make sure you don’t take off too much and ruin your lash strips, we recommend trimming off only a little at a time, repeatedly checking the fit until the false lash bands are the exact same width as your eyelids.
Apply the Eyelash Glue
The next step is applying your lash glue. You have a couple of options for what to use for this step:
- Lash pen: You can use our Red Aspen Lucy’s Lash Pen, which combines eyeliner and lash adhesive in one easy-to-apply felt-tip pen. The felt tip allows for incredibly precise application, and the quick-drying formula means you can have your lashes on and be out the door in minutes. To use, shake the pen and apply it at your natural lash line, just like you would eyeliner.
- Lash glue/adhesive: Apply the lash glue/adhesive along the entire lash band. Wait for about 20 seconds until the glue is tacky before applying the lashes.
Position False Eyelashes on Your Natural Eyelashes
If you’re using Lucy’s Lash Pen, apply the falsies to your natural lash line right away, without waiting for the glue to dry at all.
If you’re using standard lash glue, you should have waited about 20 seconds for the glue to become sticky. When the glue is ready, apply them to your lash line as close to your natural lashes as possible. Using light pressure, apply them with either your fingers, a pair of tweezers, or a lash applicator (like Red Aspen’s snazzy hot pink lash applicator) for extra precision.
How To Remove False Eyelashes
Now that we’ve covered how to apply false lashes, the next thing you’ll need to know is how to remove them.
Dip a cotton swab in your favorite oil-free eye makeup remover and scrub the glue along the lash band until it dissolves. Grabbing your false lashes from the band, pull them off gently and store them in their original case for the next use.
(If you’re in search of even better storage options for your gorgeous lash collection, Red Aspen’s ultimate lash book makes it easy to store as many as 20 sets of lashes safely in one place.)
If you’re curious how long false lashes take to wear out—they can last anywhere from a few days to two weeks depending on the quality of the lashes, how you care for them, and how long you wear them each time.
